Dear friends: As we wrap up the month of June, now more than ever we celebrate the acceptance, worth, and contributions of everyone in the LGBTQIA+ community. In this special Pride Month update, we wanted to announce the opening of our 2024 scholarship program, as well as offer an update of the events we’ve been hard at work on.

2024 Scholarship Program Live!

Our 2024 scholarship application is live! Annually, SAGAA awards qualified LGBTQ+ applicants scholarships and further compiles resumes for students interested in pursuing part-time and full-time actuarial employment.

Please help spread the word to any and all students who might be interested. We anticipate closing the application September 15, offering this Fall’s students an opportunity to apply after the commencement of the 2024-2025 scholastic year.

Recent Events

May 30 Board Meeting: On May 30, we conducted our annual in-person Board Meeting in Minneapolis, MN, at space generously donated by our sponsor Allianz, with board member Craig Chu (he/him; FSA) and SAGAA founder Jake Akstins (he/him; ACAS) offering a presentation to employees Becoming an Ally. Thank you, Allianz, for donating this meeting space and being our sponsor!

June 20 Intersectionality Presentation: On June 20, board members Simone Walker (she/her; FCAS) and Craig Chu presented with Brandon Wright (he/him; FSA) and James Jones (he/him; FSA) the presentation Renaissance: Intersectionality of LGBTQ+ and Black Experiences in the Actuarial Profession, in a joint presentation of IABA and SAGAA to interested parties at our sponsor Lincoln Financial Group. (Note this was an encore presentation of an original presentation at IABA’s 2023 annual conference, and encored in a webinar hosted by the Casualty Actuarial Society on February 8, 2024.) June 27 presentation: On June 27, board members Dave Daly (he/him; ASA), Craig Chu, and Jonah von der Embse (he/him; FSA) offered an original research presentation at Gold Sponsor New York Life’s office headquarters in Manhattan: HIV & Insurance: Past, Present, and Future. Volunteer Opportunities

The SAGAA Regulatory and Advocacy Committee (RAC) seeks to influence insurance policy to be more accessible and inclusive of LGBTQ+ individuals. If you have expertise and interest to join in this work, please reach out to Jonah.

Presentation: SAGAA frequently presents, educates, and informs interested audiences regarding LGBTQ+ topics of interest. If you feel informed and passionate in helping this mission, please reach out to Dave.

Administration: The SAGAA Board seeks passionate individuals with experience in nonprofit administration and mailing list management and maintenance to help us improve our processes and continue our growth. If that’s you, please reach out to Craig.
